LABORATORY FACILITIES

These practical courses aim to provide the students with practical knowledge in basic machining processes that could be performed in Centre lathe, Capstan lathe and Turret lathe etc.
The practical classes provide opportunity for students to visualize essential components of these machines. Students understand the method of operating the machines safely. Also this practical course aims to provide the students with practical knowledge in basic manufacturing processes that could be performed in standard machine tools such as shaping, milling and slotting, grinding and allied machines. The practical classes provide opportunity for students to learn the methods to machine the models to desired accuracy and quality. At the end of the second year, student will be capable of demonstrating the various basic operations such as Facing, Step turning, Drilling, tapping, Grooving, Chamfering and Knurling, External thread cutting, Step turning, counter boring, Eccentric turning and Taper turning. Also student will be capable of demonstrating the various basic operations such as shaping square block, machining by single point cutting tool, machining key ways, machining a spur gear, milling a Polygon Surface and measuring cutting tool forces etc.

- FITTING, SHEET METAL AND CARPENTRY LABORATORY

The Engineering Practices Laboratory consists of the Welding,Carpentry, Foundry, Fitting section and sheet metal section. The objective of this laboratory is to study and practice the various operations and to equip with the practical knowledge required in the core industries. This Laboratory is used to provide exposure to the first year students with hands on experience on various basic engineering practices in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Experiments performed in the Carpentry shop include T lap joint, Dove tail lap joint, Mortise and Tenon joints. Students are illustrated with demonstration experiments in the Sheet Metal Shop as part of their syllabus. The Engineering Practices Laboratory is also used for Welding fabrication of projects by the students for their Project works in the 8th Semester, B.E. Mechanical Engineering course. Experiments performed in the Welding shop include Single V-butt joint, double lap joint and T joint.
Fitting, Sheet metal and Carpentry Laboratory lab was established in the year 1966 measuring 356. 74sq.m area. The objective of this laboratory is to study and practice the various operations and to equip with practical knowledge required in the core industries. This Laboratory is used to provide exposure to the first year UG students with hands on experience on various basic engineering practices in Mechanical Engineering. Experiments performed in the Carpentry shop include Cross, T lap joint and Dove tail lap joint, and in Fitting shop are V-fitting and Square fitting. Students are illustrated with demonstration experiments in the Sheet Metal Shop as part of their syllabus.

This Laboratory is used to provide exposure to the first year students with hands on experience on various basic engineering practices in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and communication, Computer science and Metallurgical. Particularly this foundry and welding lab consists of green sand mould cavity preparation using patterns and V-butt joint, double lap joint and T joint using arc welding machine. This Laboratory is also used for Welding fabrication of projects by the students for their Project works in the 8th Semester, B.E. Mechanical Engineering course.

- MECHANICS OF MACHINES & INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING LAB

Mechanics of Machines laboratory was established in the Mechanical Engineering block with 239.94(Sq.m) Carpet area. The laboratory comprises major equipment’s like Spring mass system, Porter Governor, Watt governor, Proell Governor, Whirling of shaft, Quick return mechanism, Double rotor system apparatus, Gyroscope, Mechanism models like Slider crank mechanism, Four bar mechanism.
Experiments in this lab are related to concepts of courses such as kinematics of machinery, dynamics of machinery and vibration analysis for under graduate students.
The objective of conducting the practical classes in the laboratory is to develop skills to analyse the various forces acting on a mechanical system and to identify the unbalanced forces and its effects such as vibration and its control.
Apart from conducting the laboratory classes, the lab facilities are effectively utilized for project work by the students.
Mechanics of Machines & Industrial Engineering Lab

The laboratory is to provide understanding of all Engineering and its Application components of linear, angular, accuracy of work piece, dimensional and error measurement analysis done by using metrology measurement tools. The laboratory equipped with various instruments like Vernier Bevel Protractor, Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge, Sine bar and Slip Gauges, Vernier Depth Gauge, Autocollimator, Profile Projector, Three Wire Unit for Thread Measurement, Pneumatic Comparator, and Coordinate Measuring Machine which will be utilized by Students to conduct various studies in the field of manufacturing.
METROLOGY LABORATORY
- STEAM, FUELS AND HEAT TRANSFER LABORATORY

The steam, fuels and heat transfer laboratory has been constructed over an area of 352.10 m2. It is equipped with the latest facilities like compact heat exchangers, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning test set up and phase change module. The objective of this laboratory is to provide the students a practical knowledge by doing various experiments in the field of Heat transfer and Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. The experiments such as determination of efficiency and effectiveness of compact heat exchanger, performance testing of vapour compression and absorption refrigeration system, determination of Stefan-Boltzmann constant and determination of emissivity of grey and black surfaces. The laboratory equipment are also being used for doing the programme level project work by UG and PG students. There is an Air-Conditioning simulation chamber which has been purchased under TEQIP – I at the cost of Rs.12, 60,860/- in the year 2006. Using the simulation chamber, any kind of new and alternate refrigerant can be analyzed in replacing the conventional refrigerants. The project and research work also being carried out in this chamber by the UG, PG and Ph.D. scholars of the department.

The Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory has been established over an area of 352.10 sq.m. and is equipped with facilities like computerized IC engine, IC engines of petrol, diesel and SCR models, air compressor, fire and flash point apparatus and viscometers. The objective of this laboratory is to provide students a best learning experience to understand significant concepts and applications in the field of thermal energy-based applications, utilization and also applications of IC engines. By conducting experiments in this laboratory, students will grasp the knowledge in the area like heat energy, performance measurements of various engine parameters, emissions and environmental impact, fuel economy and fuel composition effects on engine operation and mechanical limitations of obtaining maximum performance. The laboratory is supported with a laboratory in-charge and a Foreman instructor who are responsible for all the day to day activities of the laboratory.

CAD Lab of this department is equipped with 25 Nos of high end desktop computers with i7 processor and 16 GB RAM for Simulation and analysis of PG Thermal and CAD students. There are 24 Nos of i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and 5 Nos of i5 processor, 4GB RAM Desktop computers available for UG students of this department alone. Apart from the above there are 6 Nos of i3 and core 2 duo processor system and A3 network printer cum scanner facility is also available for taking printout.
There is a high-speed internet facility and uninterrupted power facility are also provided for all the computers

Mechatronics Laboratory under the Department of Mechanical Engineering is one among the important labs that serves academics as well as research. The rapid advances of automation technologies in the world, students should have multi domain knowledge and system level integration which is imparted by Mechatronics. This laboratory is equipped with sophisticated equipments and other facilities. The mentioned equipments are shown here.
Key facilities and equipments
- Hydraulic and Pneumatic trainer kits will build and test the functionality of industrial automation.
- Electro hydraulic and Electro pneumatic with PLC trainer Kit will improve knowledge in integrating Electro-mechanical components.
- NI -DAQ and Data Acquisition Systems for acquisition of process variable such as pressure, flow and temperature and also studying Real Time Controller for software and hardware,
- Advances of microcontroller and PLCs, students are studying the controlling the actuators in mechatronics to many products and systems.
- Students will be experienced in building software and electrical tools to control an actuator by applying Automation studio and Labview software.
- Students will understand how to use electrical components, software, and mechanical components to achieve a user-friendly mechatronic system.
- In Robot Control, students will build and test the functionality of robot motion and its trajectory and also analyze functions of the sensors.
Due to this versatility and acquisition of multiple skills and varied knowledge, students will get an edge in the job market.
MECHANOTRONICS LABORATORY
- AUTOMOBILE LABORATORY

The newly developed automobile laboratory has a spread of over 140 sq.m. in area. The main objective of this lab is to make the student understand the fundamental concepts of automobile engineering. Student has been made to have hands on practice for dismantling and assembling of various modules of petrol and diesel engines. Study of different types of engines, carburetor, water pump, gear mechanism, etc. facilitates the student to understand the functions and importance of each. Students also gain knowledge about transmission, suspension, steering and braking systems. The lab is equipped with multi-cylinder diesel and petrol engines. By this, students can equip themselves towards automobile field and associate themselves with professional bodies like Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to be in stream with the technological updates going around the world. Also, students take part in competition Go-kart vehicles fabricated in house. This provides a platform for students to apply their knowledge in real time applications.
AUTOMOBILE LABORATORY

This CNC laboratory was established in the year of 2014 under TEQIP- II & III grant. Main objective of this laboratory is to provide ample opportunity to UG, PG and Research scholars to learn various advanced manufacturing processes and do their innovative projects. R & D and Consultancy work FOR Internal Revenue Generation are carried out using these machines. The Facilities available are CNC vertical milling centre, CNC Turning centre, CNC Drill EDM, CNC Wire cut EDM and 100 Ton Hydraulic press. The approximate cost of the machines available in this lab is Rs.76, 35,916.
